Drought Pushes Bhimadevarpally Farmers From Paddy to Profitable Vegetable Farming

Bhimadevarapalli farmers earn profits through vegetable farming

Bhimadevarpally: Amid severe drought conditions, farmers in Telangana’s Bhimadevarpally mandal are increasingly shifting from paddy cultivation to vegetable farming, seeking better returns with less water. The shortage of rainfall and declining groundwater levels have made conventional paddy farming increasingly difficult in the upland region.

The prevailing drought conditions, attributed in the report to the El Niño effect, have resulted in groundwater levels falling sharply in agricultural wells and borewells. With water availability becoming a major concern, the Agriculture Department and the government have been encouraging farmers to move away from water-intensive paddy cultivation and adopt vegetable farming and other dryland crops.

Responding to the advisory, farmers in several villages across Bhimadevarpally mandal have taken up the cultivation of tomatoes, ridge gourd, bitter gourd, bottle gourd and brinjal, among other vegetables.

Vegetable Farming Emerges as a Profitable Alternative

The shift towards vegetable farming in Bhimadevarpally is gaining momentum as several crops are fetching encouraging prices in nearby markets. Ridge gourd and bitter gourd are reportedly selling for up to ₹50 per kg, providing farmers with better returns.

Farmers are transporting their produce to major vegetable markets in Hanamkonda, Warangal, Jammikunta and Huzurabad, where vegetables have a steady demand. Brinjal is also fetching satisfactory prices, adding to the income prospects of farmers who have opted for vegetable cultivation.

The improved market prices have encouraged more farmers to consider vegetable farming as an alternative to paddy cultivation, particularly in areas where irrigation water is limited.

Less Water, More Cultivation

One of the biggest advantages of vegetable farming, according to local farmers, is its lower water requirement compared with paddy cultivation.

Farmers say the quantity of water required to cultivate one acre of paddy can be used to cultivate nearly two acres of vegetables. This makes vegetable farming particularly suitable for drought-hit areas where groundwater resources are under pressure.

Farmers are also adopting drip irrigation for vegetable cultivation. The irrigation method helps deliver water directly to the plants, reducing water wastage and improving water-use efficiency.

With water conservation becoming increasingly important during drought conditions, drip irrigation is emerging as an important tool for farmers shifting towards vegetable farming.

Farmers Expect Continued Income From Kharif Crop

Vegetable crops cultivated during the current Kharif season are expected to continue yielding produce for around two more months, giving farmers an extended period of income.

Unlike paddy, which requires considerable quantities of water throughout the crop cycle, vegetables can provide multiple harvests depending on the crop. Farmers believe this combination of lower water consumption, regular harvesting and favourable market prices makes vegetable farming more profitable than paddy cultivation under the prevailing conditions.

Strong Demand for Ridge Gourd, Bitter Gourd and Brinjal

Among the vegetables cultivated in Bhimadevarpally mandal, ridge gourd, bitter gourd and brinjal are attracting considerable market demand.

Ridge gourd and bitter gourd are reportedly commanding prices of up to ₹50 per kg. Bottle gourd is also providing additional income, with farmers reporting prices ranging from ₹10 to ₹20 per piece.

The market demand for vegetables has therefore become an important factor encouraging farmers to diversify their crops and reduce their dependence on paddy.

Farmer Says Vegetable Farming Is More Profitable

Sangam Sadanandam, farmer from Koppur, said vegetable cultivation has proved profitable for him.

“I am cultivating ridge gourd, bitter gourd, brinjal and bottle gourd during the Kharif season. Ridge gourd, bitter gourd and brinjal have good demand in the market. Bottle gourd is selling for around ₹10 to ₹20 per piece. Compared with paddy, vegetable farming can provide better profits,” he said.

Water Crisis Drives Crop Diversification

The experience of farmers in Bhimadevarpally highlights how changing weather conditions and water scarcity are influencing agricultural decisions. As groundwater levels decline, farmers are increasingly looking for low-water crops and profitable farming alternatives.

The growing adoption of vegetable farming in Bhimadevarpally could provide a model for other drought-prone regions, particularly where farmers have access to nearby vegetable markets and irrigation facilities such as drip systems.

For farmers facing water shortages, vegetable farming, crop diversification and efficient irrigation are emerging as key strategies to protect farm income while reducing dependence on water-intensive paddy cultivation.
