జాతీయ క్రీడా దినోత్సవం వేళ.. వరంగల్లో హాకీకి కష్టకాలం!
మైదానాలు లేక మరుగున పడుతున్న హాకీ క్రీడ.. జేఎన్ఎస్లో హాకీ కోర్టు ఎక్కడ? | క్రీడాకారుల ఆవేదన
వరంగల్: భారతదేశంలో హాకీకి ఎంతో గొప్ప చరిత్ర ఉంది. ఒలింపిక్స్లో భారత జట్టుకు ప్రాతినిథ్యం వహించి మూడు స్వర్ణ పతకాలు సాధించిన హాకీ మాంత్రికుడు మేజర్ ధ్యాన్చంద్ జయంతిని పురస్కరించుకుని ఆగస్టు 29న దేశవ్యాప్తంగా జాతీయ క్రీడా దినోత్సవం నిర్వహిస్తున్నారు. అయితే.. హాకీకి ఇంతటి ఘన చరిత్ర ఉన్నప్పటికీ వరంగల్ జిల్లాలో మాత్రం ఈ క్రీడ పరిస్థితి ఆందోళనకరంగా మారింది. హాకీ క్రీడాకారులకు సరైన మైదానాలు లేకపోవడం, జేఎన్ఎస్లో హాకీ కోర్టు అందుబాటులో లేకపోవడం, శిక్షణకు అవసరమైన వసతులు లేకపోవడంతో వర్ధమాన హాకీ క్రీడాకారులు ఇబ్బందులు పడుతున్నారు.
గత మూడు దశాబ్దాలుగా హనుమకొండ నయీంనగర్లోని ‘కుడా’ మైదానంలో కొందరు సీనియర్ క్రీడాకారులు హాకీ క్లబ్ ఏర్పాటు చేసుకుని వర్ధమాన క్రీడాకారులకు శిక్షణ ఇస్తున్నారు. కనీస సౌకర్యాలు కూడా పూర్తిస్థాయిలో అందుబాటులో లేకపోయినా.. హాకీపై ఉన్న మక్కువతో చిన్నారులకు శిక్షణ అందిస్తున్నారు. ప్రభుత్వపరంగా తగిన ప్రోత్సాహం, మౌలిక వసతులు కల్పిస్తే వరంగల్ నుంచి జాతీయ, అంతర్జాతీయ స్థాయి హాకీ క్రీడాకారులను తీర్చిదిద్దే అవకాశం ఉందని సీనియర్ క్రీడాకారులు చెబుతున్నారు.
జేఎన్ఎస్లో హాకీ కోర్టు కరువు
ఒకప్పుడు హనుమకొండలోని జేఎన్ఎస్ (జవహర్లాల్ నెహ్రూ స్టేడియం) వర్ధమాన క్రీడాకారులకు ప్రధాన శిక్షణ కేంద్రంగా ఉండేది. 2005కు ముందు ఇతర క్రీడలకు ఉన్నట్లే హాకీ క్రీడకు ప్రత్యేక కోర్టు కూడా ఉండేది. దీంతో విద్యార్థులు, యువ క్రీడాకారులు పెద్ద సంఖ్యలో హాకీ సాధన చేసేవారు.
అయితే కాలక్రమంలో జేఎన్ఎస్లో హాకీ కోర్టు అందుబాటులో లేకుండా పోయింది. ప్రస్తుతం కొన్ని క్రీడలకే మైదానాలు పరిమితం కావడంతో హాకీ క్రీడాకారులకు సాధన చేసేందుకు సరైన మైదానం లేకుండా పోయింది. ఫలితంగా విద్యార్థుల్లో హాకీపై ఆసక్తి తగ్గుతోందని సీనియర్ క్రీడాకారులు ఆవేదన వ్యక్తం చేస్తున్నారు.
జేఎన్ఎస్లో హాకీ కోర్టు ఏర్పాటు చేయాలని ఎన్నోసార్లు కోరినా సంబంధిత అధికారులు పట్టించుకోవడం లేదనే విమర్శలు వినిపిస్తున్నాయి. సాట్, జిల్లా క్రీడా ప్రాధికార సంస్థ (డీఎస్ఏ) అధికారులు హాకీ క్రీడపై ప్రత్యేక దృష్టి సారించాల్సిన అవసరం ఉందని క్రీడా వర్గాలు అంటున్నాయి.
వరంగల్కు గర్వకారణం.. పెరుమాళ్ మధుకరన్
వరంగల్ జిల్లా హాకీ చరిత్రలో పెరుమాళ్ మధుకరన్ పేరు ప్రత్యేకంగా చెప్పుకోవాల్సిందే. హాకీ జట్టుకు చీఫ్ కోచ్గా సేవలందించిన ఆయన జాతీయ, అంతర్జాతీయ స్థాయిలో వందలాది మంది క్రీడాకారులకు శిక్షణ అందించారు.
ఆయన శిక్షణలో అనేక మంది క్రీడాకారులు రాష్ట్ర, జాతీయ స్థాయిలో రాణించి స్వర్ణ, రజత, కాంస్య పతకాలు సాధించారు. ములుగు ప్రాంతానికి చెందిన పెరుమాళ్ మధుకరన్ సేవలు ఉమ్మడి వరంగల్ జిల్లా క్రీడా రంగానికి గర్వకారణంగా నిలిచాయి.
ఇలాంటి ప్రతిభావంతులైన కోచ్లు, క్రీడాకారులు ఉన్నప్పటికీ హాకీ క్రీడకు అవసరమైన మౌలిక వసతులు లేకపోవడం ఆందోళన కలిగిస్తోంది.
జేఎన్ఎస్లో శిక్షణ పొందిన ఎమ్మెల్యే
వరంగల్ పశ్చిమ ఎమ్మెల్యే నాయిని రాజేందర్రెడ్డి కూడా జేఎన్ఎస్ మైదానంలో హాకీ శిక్షణ పొందిన వారిలో ఒకరు. అదే విధంగా వర్ధన్నపేట ఎమ్మెల్యే కేఆర్ నాగరాజు కూడా జేఎన్ఎస్లో హాకీ శిక్షణ పొందినవారేనని క్రీడా వర్గాలు గుర్తుచేస్తున్నాయి.
ఒకప్పుడు ప్రజాప్రతినిధులను సైతం తీర్చిదిద్దిన జేఎన్ఎస్ మైదానం.. నేడు హాకీ క్రీడాకారులకు అందుబాటులో లేకపోవడం పరిస్థితి ఎంతగా మారిందో చెప్పకనే చెబుతోందని సీనియర్ క్రీడాకారులు అంటున్నారు.
‘హాకీ క్రీడను ప్రోత్సహించాలి’
సోదా రామకృష్ణ, హాకీ అసోసియేషన్ హనుమకొండ జిల్లా అధ్యక్షుడు మాట్లాడుతూ.. హాకీ సాధన చేసేందుకు అవసరమైన మైదానాలు లేకపోవడంతో ఈ క్రీడ క్రమంగా మరుగున పడుతోందన్నారు.
కొన్నేళ్ల క్రితం హనుమకొండ జేఎన్ఎస్లో హాకీ కోర్టు ఉండేదని, ప్రస్తుతం అది అందుబాటులో లేకపోవడంతో సమస్య ఏర్పడిందని తెలిపారు. జిల్లాలో హాకీ క్రీడను బతికించేందుకు హనుమకొండ నయీంనగర్ హాకీ క్లబ్, పరకాల ప్రాంతాల్లో సాధన చేస్తున్న చిన్నారులకు జిల్లా హాకీ అసోసియేషన్ తరఫున సొంతంగా హాకీ స్టిక్లు, క్రీడా సామగ్రి కొనుగోలు చేసి ఉచితంగా అందిస్తున్నామని చెప్పారు.
ప్రభుత్వం ప్రత్యేకంగా హాకీ క్రీడపై దృష్టి సారించి మైదానాలు, శిక్షణ సౌకర్యాలు కల్పించాలని కోరారు.
‘హాకీ కోర్టులు ఏర్పాటు చేయాలి’
హుస్సేన్, హాకీ కోచ్, మామునూర్ మాట్లాడుతూ.. గతంలో వరంగల్లో హాకీ క్రీడకు మంచి ఆదరణ ఉండేదన్నారు. క్రీడా మైదానాలు హాకీ క్రీడాకారులతో కళకళలాడేవని గుర్తుచేశారు.
అయితే కొన్ని సంవత్సరాలుగా సాట్, జిల్లా క్రీడా ప్రాధికార సంస్థలు హాకీపై తగిన శ్రద్ధ చూపకపోవడంతో హాకీ కోర్టులు అందుబాటులో లేకుండా పోయాయని ఆరోపించారు. దీంతో విద్యార్థులు హాకీ క్రీడపై ఆసక్తి చూపడం తగ్గిందన్నారు.
జేఎన్ఎస్లో హాకీ కోర్టు ఏర్పాటు చేయడంతో పాటు ప్రత్యేక హాకీ కోచ్ను నియమించాలని ఆయన డిమాండ్ చేశారు.
వరంగల్కు అంతర్జాతీయ క్రికెట్ స్టేడియం.. ఎప్పటికి?
ఇదిలా ఉంటే వరంగల్ నగరంలో అంతర్జాతీయ ప్రమాణాలతో క్రికెట్ స్టేడియం, క్రీడా పాఠశాల ఏర్పాటుకు ప్రభుత్వం గతంలో హామీ ఇచ్చింది. ముఖ్యమంత్రి రేవంత్రెడ్డి క్రీడలకు ప్రాధాన్యం ఇస్తూ హైదరాబాద్లో స్పోర్ట్స్ యూనివర్సిటీతో పాటు వరంగల్లో క్రీడా మౌలిక వసతులను అభివృద్ధి చేయాలని నిర్ణయించినప్పటికీ.. ఏడాది గడుస్తున్నా పనుల్లో ఆశించిన స్థాయిలో పురోగతి కనిపించడం లేదని జిల్లా వాసులు అసహనం వ్యక్తం చేస్తున్నారు.
30 ఎకరాల స్థలంపై ప్రతిపాదన
వరంగల్ పశ్చిమ ఎమ్మెల్యే నాయిని రాజేందర్రెడ్డి మాట్లాడుతూ.. వరంగల్లో అంతర్జాతీయ స్థాయి క్రికెట్ స్టేడియం ఏర్పాటు చేయాలని ఉమ్మడి వరంగల్ జిల్లాకు చెందిన ఎమ్మెల్యేలతో కలిసి గతేడాది సీఎం రేవంత్రెడ్డిని కలసి విజ్ఞప్తి చేసినట్లు తెలిపారు.
స్టేడియం నిర్మాణానికి స్టేషన్ఘన్పూర్ నియోజకవర్గ పరిధిలోని ధర్మసాగర్ మండలం ఉనికిచెర్ల వద్ద జాతీయ రహదారి పక్కన లేఅవుట్ పరిధిలో సుమారు 30 ఎకరాల స్థలం అందుబాటులో ఉందని సీఎం దృష్టికి తీసుకెళ్లినట్లు చెప్పారు.
దీనిపై సీఎం సానుకూలంగా స్పందించి వరంగల్లో క్రికెట్ స్టేడియం ఏర్పాట్లను పూర్తి చేయాలని సంబంధిత స్పోర్ట్స్ అథారిటీ కార్యదర్శిని ఆదేశించినట్లు వెల్లడించారు.
అయితే ఉనికిచెర్ల సమీపంలోని ప్రభుత్వ స్థలంలో కొన్ని భూ సమస్యలు ఉండటంతో పనుల్లో కొంత జాప్యం జరుగుతోందని తెలిపారు.
క్రికెట్ స్టేడియంతో పాటు హాకీ కోర్టు
వరంగల్ జిల్లాలో క్రికెట్ స్టేడియం, క్రీడా పాఠశాలతో పాటు హాకీ కోర్టు నిర్మాణానికి కూడా కృషి చేస్తామని ఎమ్మెల్యే నాయిని రాజేందర్రెడ్డి తెలిపారు.
త్వరలోనే జిల్లా ఉన్నతాధికారులు, ఎమ్మెల్యేలతో చర్చించి క్రీడా మౌలిక వసతుల అభివృద్ధికి చర్యలు తీసుకుంటామని చెప్పారు.
జాతీయ క్రీడా దినోత్సవం రోజునైనా దృష్టి సారిస్తారా?
మేజర్ ధ్యాన్చంద్ జన్మదినమైన ఆగస్టు 29ను దేశవ్యాప్తంగా జాతీయ క్రీడా దినోత్సవంగా నిర్వహిస్తున్న సమయంలో.. వరంగల్లో హాకీ క్రీడ ఎదుర్కొంటున్న సమస్యలు మరోసారి తెరపైకి వచ్చాయి.
హాకీ క్రీడను ప్రోత్సహించాలి.. జేఎన్ఎస్లో హాకీ కోర్టు ఏర్పాటు చేయాలి.. హాకీ కోచ్ను నియమించాలి.. వర్ధమాన హాకీ క్రీడాకారులకు మౌలిక వసతులు కల్పించాలి అనే డిమాండ్లు బలంగా వినిపిస్తున్నాయి.
క్రీడాకారుల్లో ప్రతిభ ఉన్నా.. సాధనకు మైదానం లేకపోతే ఆ ప్రతిభకు గుర్తింపు ఎలా వస్తుందనే ప్రశ్నలు ఉత్పన్నమవుతున్నాయి. కనీసం జాతీయ క్రీడా దినోత్సవం సందర్భంగా అయినా వరంగల్లో హాకీ క్రీడ అభివృద్ధికి ప్రభుత్వం స్పష్టమైన కార్యాచరణ ప్రకటించాలని క్రీడా వర్గాలు కోరుతున్నాయి.

WARANGAL: As India observes National Sports Day 2026 on August 29 to commemorate hockey legend Major Dhyan Chand, a different picture is emerging from Warangal. While the government continues to emphasise sports development and world-class sporting infrastructure, hockey players in Warangal are struggling with a shortage of grounds, training facilities and a dedicated hockey court.
For nearly three decades, senior hockey players have been running a hockey club at the KUDA Ground in Naimnagar, providing training to aspiring players despite limited facilities. The players and coaches now want the government and sports authorities to restore a dedicated hockey facility at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium (JNS) in Hanamkonda.
The demand has gained significance on National Sports Day, which is observed every year on August 29 to mark the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand, one of India’s greatest hockey players.
Warangal hockey players demand dedicated JNS hockey court
Before 2005, the JNS Stadium in Hanamkonda had a hockey court, along with facilities for several other sporting disciplines. The stadium once served as an important training centre for budding sportspersons, including hockey players.
Over the years, however, the hockey court disappeared from the facility. With the available sporting infrastructure increasingly being allocated to other disciplines, hockey players in Warangal are left without a dedicated ground for regular practice.
Senior players allege that the lack of attention from the Sports Authority of Telangana and the District Sports Authority has contributed to the decline of hockey in the district.
They say that talent is available among schoolchildren and youngsters, but the absence of proper hockey grounds, coaching facilities and sports equipment is discouraging students from taking up the sport seriously.
30 years of hockey training at Naimnagar
Despite the infrastructure shortage, senior players at Naimnagar have kept the sport alive.
For around 30 years, the hockey club at the KUDA Ground has been providing training to young and aspiring hockey players. The club has continued its activities with limited facilities, relying largely on the commitment of senior players and coaches.
Sports enthusiasts say the initiative demonstrates the continuing interest in hockey in Warangal, but also highlights the need for government support.
According to them, providing a modern hockey court and professional coaching facilities could help identify talented youngsters and develop them into district, state, national and international-level players.
Warangal has a proud hockey legacy
Warangal and the erstwhile combined Warangal district have produced several players and coaches associated with hockey.
One notable name is Perumal Madhukaran, a native of Mulugu, who served as chief coach of a hockey team and trained hundreds of players at national and international levels.
His contribution to developing hockey players and helping athletes win several gold, silver and bronze medals at various levels remains a matter of pride for the region.
Senior players argue that a district with such a hockey legacy should have adequate infrastructure to nurture the next generation of players.
MLA K.R. Nagaraju also trained at JNS
The importance of JNS as a former hockey training centre is also reflected in the sporting backgrounds of local public representatives.
Vardhannapet MLA K.R. Nagaraju is among those who received hockey training at the JNS ground, according to senior players.
They say the stadium once provided a platform for youngsters to pursue hockey and develop competitive sporting careers. The absence of a dedicated hockey court today, they argue, represents a major setback for the sport in the region.
‘Hockey must be promoted’
Soda Ramakrishna, Hanamkonda District President of the Hockey Association, said the sport was gradually disappearing because players did not have adequate grounds to practise.
He recalled that JNS had a hockey court several years ago and said the facility gradually became unavailable as the stadium became restricted to selected sporting disciplines.
The district hockey association, he said, was making efforts to keep the sport alive by supporting children practising at Parakala and the Naimnagar Hockey Club in Hanamkonda.
The association has been purchasing hockey sticks and sports equipment with its own resources and distributing them free of cost to young players, he said.
Ramakrishna stressed that government intervention and proper infrastructure were essential to revive hockey in Warangal.
Coaches seek hockey court and professional coach
Hussain, hockey coach from Mamnoor, said hockey had enjoyed considerable popularity in Warangal in the past, with grounds regularly filled with hockey players.
He said the decline in infrastructure and inadequate attention from sports authorities had affected the popularity of hockey among students.
He urged the authorities to establish a dedicated hockey court at JNS and appoint a qualified hockey coach so that students could receive systematic training.
According to coaches, the availability of a proper hockey ground could significantly improve participation among schoolchildren and help create a structured talent-development programme in the district.
Warangal international cricket stadium still awaits progress
The demand for a hockey court comes amid the larger debate over sports infrastructure in Warangal.
The Telangana government has been focusing on sports development, including the proposed Sports University in Hyderabad and plans for major sporting infrastructure in Warangal.
The government has also proposed an international-standard cricket stadium and sports school in Warangal. However, residents and sports enthusiasts say that despite announcements and budgetary provisions, visible progress on the ground has been slow.
The delay has led to growing impatience among people who had expected Warangal to emerge as a major sports hub in Telangana.
30 acres identified for proposed cricket stadium
Warangal West MLA Naini Rajender Reddy said that he and other MLAs from the erstwhile Warangal district had met Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy last year and requested the establishment of an international-standard cricket stadium in Warangal.
According to him, nearly 30 acres of land is available near Unikicherla in Dharmasagar mandal, along the National Highway, within the Station Ghanpur Assembly constituency.
The proposal was brought to the Chief Minister’s attention, and he responded positively and instructed the concerned Sports Authority secretary to take steps towards the proposed stadium, the MLA said.
However, minor land-related issues concerning government land near Unikicherla have resulted in some delay, he added.
‘Will work for hockey court too’
Naini Rajender Reddy said discussions would soon be held with senior district officials and fellow MLAs regarding the development of sports infrastructure.
He said efforts would be made not only for the proposed international cricket stadium and sports school, but also for the construction of a hockey court in Warangal.
The assurance has raised hopes among hockey players and coaches who have been demanding dedicated infrastructure for the sport.
National Sports Day brings hockey infrastructure into focus
The demand for a JNS hockey court has acquired added significance on National Sports Day.
Major Dhyan Chand’s contribution to Indian hockey is remembered across the country on August 29. His legacy continues to inspire generations of hockey players, but sports enthusiasts in Warangal say inspiration alone is not enough.
They want the government to provide the infrastructure required to convert sporting talent into competitive players.
A dedicated hockey court at JNS, qualified coaching staff, sports equipment and regular competitions could provide a much-needed boost to hockey in Warangal.
For the young players practising at Naimnagar’s KUDA Ground, the message is clear: they have the talent and enthusiasm. What they need now is a proper hockey ground and institutional support.
