Telangana Plans Floating Solar Power Plants on Major Reservoirs Bhatti Vikramarka

Congress government studying floating solar projects at Nagarjuna Sagar, Srisailam and other reservoirs; Amarabad pilot project to solarise 80 villages
Hyderabad: The Telangana Congress government is giving special attention to the development of Floating Solar Power Plants on major reservoirs across the state, Deputy Chief Minister Bhatti Vikramarka has said. The state government is exploring the potential of using water surfaces for solar power generation as part of its broader strategy to expand renewable energy and meet the rapidly rising electricity demand.
Speaking during the ongoing Telangana Assembly sessions, Bhatti Vikramarka said the Electricity and Irrigation departments are jointly studying the feasibility of setting up Floating Solar Power Plants on reservoirs. Major water bodies, including Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam, are being examined for their suitability for floating solar projects.
Telangana focuses on Floating Solar Power Plants
The Deputy Chief Minister said the Congress government has taken a special initiative to promote Floating Solar Power Plants in Telangana. The technology allows solar panels to be installed on water surfaces, potentially reducing the requirement for large tracts of land for conventional solar projects.
The government is currently examining the technical and economic feasibility of floating solar projects on various reservoirs. The study is expected to assess factors such as available water surface, power generation potential, project costs and other technical requirements.
However, the high cost of Floating Solar Power Plants remains a major challenge, Bhatti Vikramarka said.
According to the Deputy Chief Minister, existing Central government regulations are resulting in an additional financial burden of around Rs 1.30 crore per MW for floating solar projects. He said investment in floating solar power could increase significantly if the Centre relaxes the applicable regulations.
Telangana electricity demand reaches 19,000 MW
Bhatti Vikramarka highlighted the rapidly increasing electricity demand in Telangana, stating that the state’s current power demand has reached around 19,000 MW.
The growing industrial sector is one of the major factors contributing to the increase in electricity consumption, he said. With industrial development and economic activity expanding across Telangana, power demand is expected to continue rising.
Against this backdrop, the government is focusing on solar power, renewable energy and pumped storage projects to strengthen Telangana’s energy security.
The expansion of solar power projects in Telangana is also being viewed as an important component of the state’s long-term renewable energy strategy.
Rs 19,000 crore spent annually on power subsidies
The Deputy Chief Minister also said the Telangana government is spending approximately Rs 19,000 crore every year on electricity subsidies.
He indicated that increasing renewable power generation could play an important role in meeting future electricity requirements while supporting the state’s broader energy transition.
The government is therefore exploring multiple clean-energy options, including Floating Solar Power Plants, solar projects and pumped storage projects.
Amarabad to get 80-village solarisation pilot project
In another major initiative, the Telangana government is taking up a pilot project for the solarisation of 80 villages in Amarabad.
Bhatti Vikramarka said efforts are underway to establish microgrids in the selected villages. The initiative is aimed at promoting decentralised solar power generation and improving the availability of renewable electricity in rural areas.
The Amarabad pilot project could serve as a model for expanding village-level solar power infrastructure to other parts of Telangana, depending on its performance and outcomes.
Solar power push in tribal areas
The Telangana government is also planning to promote solar power in tribal areas, the Deputy Chief Minister said.
As part of this initiative, the government has decided to implement the Indira Soura Giri Jala Vikasam scheme. The programme is expected to support the adoption of solar energy and strengthen sustainable development in tribal regions.
The government is looking at renewable energy not only as a source of electricity but also as a means of supporting rural and tribal development.
Farmers and people urged to adopt solar power
Bhatti Vikramarka called upon farmers and the general public to come forward and participate in the state’s solar power expansion programmes.
He also asked MLAs to create greater awareness among people about the benefits of solar electricity. Public awareness, he said, would be crucial for encouraging wider adoption of renewable energy technologies.
With electricity demand rising rapidly, Telangana is increasingly looking at solar energy and other renewable energy sources as key components of its future power strategy.
Floating solar projects could reduce land requirement
One of the key advantages being considered by the Telangana government is the possibility of utilising reservoir surfaces for power generation.
Conventional large-scale solar projects require substantial land. Floating Solar Power Plants can potentially make use of available water surfaces while reducing competition for land resources.
The Telangana government’s study of reservoirs such as Nagarjuna Sagar and Srisailam is therefore significant for determining the potential scale of floating solar power generation in the state.
Telangana’s renewable energy roadmap
The government’s focus on Floating Solar Power Plants, solarisation of villages, microgrids, pumped storage projects and solar power in tribal areas indicates a broader push towards renewable energy.
With Telangana’s electricity demand already touching 19,000 MW and industrial growth expected to drive further demand, expanding clean-energy capacity has become increasingly important.
The proposed Floating Solar Power Plants in Telangana could emerge as an important component of the state’s renewable energy roadmap if the technical and financial challenges are successfully addressed.
The government is now awaiting the outcome of the joint study by the Electricity and Irrigation departments to identify suitable reservoirs and assess the viability of large-scale floating solar power projects in Telangana.
