Karimnagar Faces Rising Dengue, Malaria Threat as Mosquito Menace Intensifies

Seasonal diseases surge across the district; residents demand urgent sanitation, fogging and mosquito-control measures
Karimnagar: Seasonal diseases are gradually tightening their grip on Karimnagar district, with cases of dengue, malaria and viral fever reportedly increasing across urban and rural areas. Despite substantial public spending on healthcare and disease prevention, the growing mosquito menace and sanitation problems have raised concerns over the preparedness of the district administration.
The situation is particularly worrying as stagnant water, clogged drains, accumulated garbage and mosquito-breeding sites continue to be reported in several localities. Residents fear that the continuing mosquito menace in Karimnagar could further accelerate the spread of dengue and malaria if preventive measures are not intensified immediately.
Mosquito menace grows across Karimnagar
The Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, along with Choppadandi, Huzurabad and Jammikunta municipalities and several gram panchayats, is facing criticism over the pace of mosquito-control operations.
Residents say the mosquito menace has increased compared with last year, particularly during the evening hours. In several divisions of Karimnagar city, mosquitoes become a major nuisance after sunset, forcing residents to depend on mosquito repellents and other preventive measures.
Although fogging has reportedly been carried out in some parts of the city in recent days, residents say the exercise has failed to provide lasting relief.
The problem is reportedly more serious in rural areas, where fogging operations are either inadequate or unavailable. Non-functional fogging machines and a shortage of funds are being cited as some of the reasons for the delay in mosquito control measures.
Viral fever cases add to public concern
With seasonal diseases increasing in Karimnagar, government and private hospitals are witnessing a steady flow of patients with fever, cold, sore throat and body pain.
Many households are reportedly dealing with one or more members suffering from fever-related symptoms. The situation is putting an additional financial burden on families who are turning to private hospitals and medical shops for treatment.
Residents have urged the Karimnagar health department to take preventive action instead of waiting for cases to rise further.
They have called for house-to-house health surveys, early identification of fever cases and the availability of essential medicines at government health facilities.
Dengue cases on the rise
The growing number of dengue cases in Karimnagar has emerged as a major concern.
According to the information available, six dengue cases have been confirmed at the Karimnagar district hospital this year. Health department surveillance has also reportedly identified additional cases in the areas covered by various Primary Health Centres (PHCs).
The number of dengue cases reported by private hospitals is believed to be considerably higher.
During a three-month period from August 2025, as many as 88 dengue cases were reportedly identified across Karimnagar district. Malaria cases were also detected in several areas, following which mosquito-control measures were reportedly undertaken.
The figures have once again highlighted the need for stronger dengue prevention and malaria control measures across the district.
Stagnant water creating mosquito breeding grounds
Poor sanitation is emerging as one of the major factors contributing to the mosquito menace in Karimnagar.
Clogged drains, stagnant sewage and garbage accumulation are providing ideal breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Old tyres, uncovered water tanks and other containers holding stagnant water can also become breeding sites for mosquito larvae.
Residents say preventive measures should be intensified before mosquito-borne diseases spread further.
Fogging alone is not enough
Officials need to go beyond routine fogging to effectively control dengue and malaria in Karimnagar.
Health experts and sanitation teams need to identify mosquito-breeding locations and destroy larvae at the source. Municipal rescue and sanitation teams should focus on cleaning:
- Clogged drains and drainage channels
- Culverts and nalas
- Stagnant sewage
- Garbage accumulation points
- Waterlogged areas
- Old tyres and discarded containers
- Uncovered water tanks and other breeding sites
Fogging should be carried out wherever necessary, but it should be combined with larval control measures for sustainable mosquito control.
‘Dry Day’ implementation needs focus
Authorities have recently decided to promote the Dry Day approach to prevent mosquito breeding. Under the initiative, households and public spaces should be checked regularly for stagnant water and potential breeding sites.
However, residents say the success of the programme will depend on effective field-level implementation and regular monitoring.
Municipal and health department personnel should conduct inspections and create awareness among residents about eliminating stagnant water around homes and public places.
Gambusia fish yet to be widely deployed
Another proposed method of controlling mosquito larvae is the use of Gambusia fish in suitable stagnant-water bodies.
Although the method can help control mosquito larvae in appropriate water sources, the process has reportedly not yet been implemented extensively by municipal authorities in several areas of the district.
Special attention is needed in slums, stagnant-water locations and other mosquito-prone areas.
Government hospitals must maintain adequate medicine stocks
As dengue, malaria and viral fever cases increase, government healthcare facilities need to be adequately stocked with medicines and essential medical supplies.
From the district hospital to PHCs, urban health facilities and village-level hospitals, authorities should ensure sufficient stocks of tablets, syrups, injections and other essential medicines.
Reports of medicine shortages in some locations have raised concerns. The health department should conduct an immediate review of medicine stocks and ensure uninterrupted supplies during the seasonal disease period.
Coordinated action needed
Controlling dengue and malaria in Karimnagar cannot be the responsibility of a single department. The municipal administration, gram panchayats, sanitation teams and health department must work together.
A coordinated mosquito-control strategy should include regular sanitation drives, larval source reduction, fogging, stagnant-water removal, Dry Day implementation, health surveillance and public awareness.
Authorities should also identify dengue and malaria hotspots and intensify preventive measures in those areas.
Public vigilance equally important
While government agencies have a key role in controlling seasonal diseases, residents also need to take preventive measures.
People should avoid allowing water to stagnate around their homes, keep water tanks covered and remove water from discarded containers, tyres and other potential mosquito-breeding sites.
Anyone developing persistent fever or other concerning symptoms should seek medical advice rather than relying solely on self-medication.
Karimnagar needs immediate preventive action
The reported rise in dengue cases, malaria cases and viral fever in Karimnagar is a warning that preventive measures need to be strengthened before the situation worsens.
Regular sanitation, effective mosquito control, larval destruction, timely fogging, Dry Day implementation, adequate medicine supplies and house-to-house surveillance can help reduce the risk of dengue and malaria outbreaks in Karimnagar.
Residents are now expecting the district administration and municipal authorities to move beyond routine measures and launch a sustained, coordinated campaign against the mosquito menace in Karimnagar.
