Vijay Faces Governor’s Roadblock 118 MLAs Required for TVK Government Formation

CHENNAI: The political situation in Tamil Nadu has entered a crucial phase, with TVK chief Vijay facing a major hurdle in his bid to form the government. Tamil Nadu Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar has reportedly made it clear that Vijay must prove the required majority support of MLAs before being invited to form the government.
Vijay met Governor Arlekar at Lok Bhavan for the second consecutive day on Thursday. The meeting, which lasted around 30 minutes, centred on the TVK government formation and the numbers required to establish a government.
According to information released by Lok Bhavan, the Governor made it clear that TVK must demonstrate the required numbers in the Assembly. Without adequate majority support, the Governor cannot invite Vijay to form the government.
The development has intensified the political suspense surrounding Vijay, TVK and Tamil Nadu government formation.
Governor insists on proof of majority
During the meeting, members of Vijay’s team reportedly argued that the majority could be demonstrated on the floor of the Assembly after the government was formed. They cited precedents and practices followed in some other states.
However, Governor Arlekar reportedly rejected the argument and insisted that the required majority must be demonstrated before government formation.
The Governor is understood to have told Vijay that unless TVK establishes that it has the necessary support in the Assembly, he cannot invite the party to form the government.
The key issue is therefore the 118-MLA majority mark, which has become the central point of the ongoing discussions between Vijay’s team and the Governor.
Vijay submits list of 112 MLAs
The issue came into sharper focus after Vijay’s first meeting with the Governor on Wednesday.
Following the Wednesday meeting, the TVK leadership consulted legal experts and subsequently sought another appointment with Governor Arlekar on Thursday morning.
The TVK delegation reportedly met the Governor at around 11 am and submitted a list containing the names of 112 MLAs, along with a letter of support from five Congress MLAs.
However, the Governor reportedly pointed out that the numbers presented were essentially the same as those submitted during the previous meeting and that there had been no increase in the claimed support.
With 118 MLAs required for a majority, the list submitted by Vijay reportedly fell short of the required number.
The Governor is understood to have advised Vijay’s team to return with evidence of the support of the required number of MLAs.
TVK explores legal options
Following the meeting, Vijay returned to his office at Panaiyur, where he held another extended discussion with legal experts.
The meeting reportedly lasted around three hours and focused on the constitutional and legal options available to the TVK leadership.
Sources indicated that Vijay’s team was considering waiting until Friday before deciding on its next course of action. If the Governor does not accept the party’s claim for government formation, the TVK may explore approaching the Supreme Court.
The possibility of legal intervention has added another dimension to the developing Tamil Nadu political crisis.
Governor questions Chief Secretary and DGP
Meanwhile, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Saikumar and Director General of Police Sandeep Rai Rathore reportedly met Governor Arlekar on Thursday evening.
During the meeting, the Governor is said to have sought explanations regarding arrangements made for Vijay.
The Governor reportedly questioned the DGP over the arrangements for a convoy for Vijay and sought to know under whose instructions the arrangements had been made.
The Chief Secretary was reportedly questioned about preparations at the Nehru Indoor Stadium allegedly made in connection with Vijay’s proposed swearing-in ceremony.
The developments have raised questions over whether administrative arrangements were made before the constitutional requirement for government formation had been settled.
Vijay seeks support from smaller parties
With the Governor insisting on proof of majority, the TVK leadership has intensified efforts to secure additional MLA support.
TVK leaders have reportedly approached smaller political parties, including the CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML, seeking their support for government formation.
The parties are reported to have two MLAs each. If all four parties extend support to TVK, the party’s claimed strength could reportedly rise to around 120 MLAs, taking it above the 118-member majority requirement.
In this context, TVK leader Nirmal Kumar reportedly met Left party leaders on Thursday to discuss the possibility of support.
The parties are expected to communicate their decision on Friday. Discussions with VCK leaders are also reportedly underway.
Will Vijay cross the majority mark?
The immediate challenge before Vijay and TVK is to secure and demonstrate the numbers demanded by the Governor.
With 112 MLAs currently being cited by the TVK camp, the party needs additional support to cross the 118-MLA majority mark.
The political calculations could change significantly if CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML decide to support TVK. Such support could potentially take the TVK camp to approximately 120 MLAs.
For Vijay, however, the immediate question is not merely securing political support but formally demonstrating the majority to the Governor.
Tamil Nadu politics enters a crucial phase
The developments have placed Vijay, TVK government formation and the Governor’s decision at the centre of Tamil Nadu politics.
On one side, the Governor is insisting on clear proof of majority support before inviting Vijay to form the government. On the other, the TVK leadership is working to bring additional parties into its support base while simultaneously examining legal options.
The next few hours could therefore prove decisive for Vijay and TVK.
The key questions now are whether TVK will be able to secure the support of at least 118 MLAs, whether the Governor will invite Vijay to form the government once the numbers are demonstrated, and whether the TVK leadership will approach the Supreme Court if the constitutional impasse continues.
For now, the battle over numbers has become the defining issue in the unfolding Tamil Nadu government formation process.
