Fake Social Media Accounts Created in Kamareddy Collector Ashish Sangwan’s Name; Cybercrime Case Registered

Fake WhatsApp and Instagram IDs identified by Collectorate officials; police investigate IP addresses and phone numbers
Kamareddy, October 27, 2026: The creation of fake social media accounts in the names of senior government officials has raised concerns over online impersonation and cyber fraud in Telangana. In the latest incident, unidentified persons allegedly created fake WhatsApp and Instagram accounts using the name of Kamareddy District Collector Ashish Sangwan.
Collectorate officials reportedly noticed the fake social media IDs being circulated online and approached the police. Following a complaint by Ahmed Hussain, Administrative Officer (AO) at the Collector’s office, a cybercrime case was registered at Devanpally Police Station.
The incident has renewed concerns about fake social media accounts, cybercrime in Telangana, online impersonation and fraudulent messages sent in the names of government officials.
Fake WhatsApp and Instagram Accounts in Collector’s Name
According to the complaint, unidentified individuals created fake WhatsApp and Instagram accounts using the name of Kamareddy District Collector Ashish Sangwan. The accounts were reportedly being circulated, potentially creating confusion among members of the public who might mistake them for the Collector’s genuine profiles.
The use of a senior government official’s name and identity on social media can create opportunities for impersonation and fraudulent communication. Such fake accounts may potentially be used to request money, obtain personal information or circulate misleading messages.
However, it has not been officially established whether anyone has already suffered a financial loss through the accounts identified in this case.
Collectorate Official Files Complaint with Devanpally Police
After identifying the fake social media profiles, officials from the Collectorate approached the police to initiate action.
Ahmed Hussain, Administrative Officer at the Kamareddy Collector’s office, lodged a complaint at Devanpally Police Station. The complaint reportedly raised concerns that the fake accounts could be used to deceive the public and damage the reputation of the Collectorate.
Police registered a case under cybercrime provisions and initiated an investigation into the creation and circulation of the fake WhatsApp and Instagram accounts.
The investigation is aimed at identifying the individuals responsible for creating the accounts and determining the purpose behind the alleged impersonation.
Police Trace IP Addresses and Phone Numbers
Sub-Inspector Bal Reddy said that a case had been registered and that an investigation was underway.
Police are examining technical information, including IP addresses and phone numbers associated with the suspicious accounts, to identify those responsible. These digital traces may help investigators establish the origin of the accounts and gather evidence related to the alleged cyber offence.
The investigation is continuing, and further details about the suspects and the motive behind the incident are awaited.
Fake Accounts in IAS Officers’ Names Raise Cybersecurity Concerns
The Kamareddy Collector fake ID case highlights the risks associated with social media impersonation. Fake accounts created using the names, photographs and official designations of IAS officers, police officials and other public authorities can be used to make fraudulent communications appear credible.
People may be more likely to trust a message when it appears to come from a senior government official. Cybercriminals can potentially exploit this trust to request urgent payments, solicit confidential information or circulate misleading instructions.
The incident involving Collector Ashish Sangwan underlines the importance of verifying social media identities before responding to messages claiming to represent government authorities.
How to Identify Fake Social Media Accounts
People can take several precautions to protect themselves from fake WhatsApp accounts, fake Instagram profiles and online impersonation scams.
- Verify the identity: Confirm suspicious messages directly with the relevant government office using independently verified contact details.
- Check payment requests: Do not transfer money simply because a message appears to come from a Collector, IAS officer or other senior official.
- Protect personal information: Never share OTPs, banking passwords, PINs or confidential financial information with unknown contacts.
- Avoid suspicious links: Do not click on unverified links received through WhatsApp, Instagram or other social media platforms.
- Report fake profiles: Report impersonation accounts through the relevant social media platform and inform the police.
- Preserve evidence: Keep screenshots, profile links, phone numbers and message details that may assist investigators.
Where to Report Cyber Fraud in India
Anyone who becomes a victim of online financial fraud should act immediately.
The national cybercrime helpline 1930 can be contacted to report financial cyber fraud. Complaints can also be submitted through the official National Cyber Crime.
Investigation Underway
The fake social media accounts allegedly created in the name of Kamareddy Collector Ashish Sangwan have prompted police action following the Collectorate’s complaint. Investigators are examining the available technical evidence to identify the people behind the accounts.
As the investigation continues, the case serves as a reminder that fake social media profiles impersonating government officials can pose risks to public trust, personal information and financial security. Residents are advised to verify suspicious communications and report suspected cyber fraud to the appropriate authorities.
