Cyclone Arnab Nears Andhra Pradesh Coast: Heavy Rain, Winds Up to 140 kmph; Flood Alert Issued

Subheading: Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Arnab approaches the Narsapur–Yanam coast; IMD warns of powerful winds, heavy to extremely heavy rainfall and possible inundation in low-lying coastal areas.
AMARAVATI, October 28, 2026: Andhra Pradesh is on high alert as Very Severe Cyclonic Storm Arnab approaches the state’s coastline, bringing the threat of destructive winds, intense rainfall and flooding across coastal districts. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), in its early-morning bulletin, located the storm approximately 30 km east of Narsapur and 45 km south-southwest of Yanam at 5:30 AM on Wednesday.
The IMD said Cyclone Arnab was likely to cross the Andhra Pradesh and Yanam coasts between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, close to the south of Yanam, as a very severe cyclonic storm. The forecast indicated maximum sustained wind speeds of 115–125 kmph, with gusts reaching 140 kmph. The bulletin stated that the landfall process was expected to continue over the following hours.
The cyclone has raised concerns about heavy rainfall, falling trees, damage to electricity infrastructure, disruption to transport and flooding in vulnerable coastal settlements. Residents have been advised to remain alert, follow official weather updates and comply with instructions issued by district authorities.
Cyclone Arnab Latest Update: Narsapur and Yanam on Alert
According to the IMD’s October 28 bulletin, Cyclone Arnab was positioned over the west-central Bay of Bengal, close to the Andhra Pradesh coast. The system was interacting with the land surface, with its northern spiral rain bands extending inland.
The storm was expected to move northwestwards and cross the coast between Bapatla and Visakhapatnam, near the south of Yanam. Narsapur, Yanam, Kakinada and surrounding coastal areas were among the locations identified in the bulletin as being close to the cyclone’s projected path.
The exact landfall status should be confirmed through the latest IMD bulletin before publication, as the early-morning report described the landfall process as ongoing.
Winds of 115–125 kmph, Gusting to 140 kmph
Strong winds are among the major threats associated with Cyclone Arnab in Andhra Pradesh. The IMD forecast sustained winds of 115–125 kmph, with gusts reaching 140 kmph during landfall.
Such conditions can damage temporary structures, uproot trees, disrupt power supplies and make road travel dangerous. Coastal communities may also experience rough to very rough sea conditions, while fishing activities could face serious risks.
Residents in cyclone-prone areas should secure loose objects, avoid exposed locations and stay away from damaged electrical infrastructure. Fishermen should strictly follow official restrictions on venturing into the sea.
Heavy to Extremely Heavy Rainfall Forecast in Coastal Andhra Pradesh
The Cyclone Arnab weather alert also highlights the possibility of intense rainfall across coastal Andhra Pradesh. The IMD’s October 28 subdivision-wise warning listed extremely heavy rain and strong surface winds for Coastal Andhra Pradesh.
Heavy rainfall over a short period can cause waterlogging, flash floods and disruption to normal life, particularly in low-lying areas. Rising water levels in local streams, canals and drainage channels may create additional hazards.
Residents should avoid crossing flooded roads, streams or overflowing drains. People living in vulnerable locations should follow evacuation instructions if issued by local authorities and move to designated safer locations when directed.
Flood and Coastal Inundation Risks
Cyclone-related flooding can occur even when a storm’s centre moves inland or begins to weaken. Heavy rainfall, coastal water movement and drainage congestion can combine to increase the risk of inundation in low-lying settlements.
The IMD’s coastal weather bulletin issued early on October 28 warned of a possible storm surge of around 1.5–2.5 metres above the astronomical tide in low-lying areas of Andhra Pradesh during landfall. It also indicated a higher surge risk near Kakinada and Yanam, with potentially significant water-level increases around the Godavari river mouth.
These were forecast risks in the bulletin, not confirmation that flooding of that magnitude had occurred. Residents should rely on current district-level warnings and avoid approaching beaches, river mouths and inundated coastal areas.
Authorities Urge People to Remain Vigilant
The approach of Cyclone Arnab has prompted warnings for residents in coastal and low-lying areas. People should monitor official updates from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the Andhra Pradesh State Disaster Management Authority (APSDMA) and local administrations.
Residents should avoid unnecessary travel during periods of intense rain and strong winds. Emergency supplies, essential medicines, drinking water, charged mobile phones and important documents should be kept ready where local authorities advise precautionary preparations.
If electricity poles or power lines are damaged, people should maintain a safe distance and immediately inform the relevant authorities. Drivers should avoid waterlogged roads and never attempt to cross moving floodwater.
Cyclone Arnab Impact: What Residents Should Do
Authorities and disaster-management agencies advise the public to take the following precautions:
- Stay indoors during periods of strong winds and heavy rainfall.
- Follow official evacuation instructions without delay.
- Avoid fishing, boating and other activities at sea until restrictions are lifted.
- Keep away from trees, hoardings, weak structures and electrical poles.
- Do not walk or drive through flooded roads and overflowing streams.
- Monitor official IMD and APSDMA alerts for changes in the cyclone’s track and intensity.
Weather Outlook: Stay Alert Until Conditions Improve
Although a cyclone may weaken after making landfall, dangerous weather can continue for several hours. Heavy rain, strong gusts, localised flooding and power disruptions may persist even after the storm’s centre moves away from the coast.
The immediate priority for Andhra Pradesh is to minimise casualties, protect vulnerable communities and ensure that residents receive timely warnings. People in Narsapur, Yanam and other coastal areas should continue to exercise caution until local authorities confirm that conditions have improved.
