ఈ మొత్తం వివాదానికి ప్రధాన కారణాల్లో ఒకటి Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of Electoral Rolls.

Congress Holds Hyderabad Rally, Demands CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s Resignation Over SIR

Congress rally in Hyderabad demanding CEC Gyanesh Kumar's resignation

Hyderabad, September 28, 2026: Telangana Congress workers and leaders staged a major protest rally in Hyderabad on Monday, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The protest was organised as part of the nationwide agitation called by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) over the Election Commission’s handling of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The Congress protest in Hyderabad saw the participation of Telangana Pradesh Congress Committee (TPCC) president B. Mahesh Kumar Goud, MLAs, senior Congress leaders and a large number of party workers.

Congress Rally From Necklace Road to EC Office

The Hyderabad Congress rally began near the Indira Gandhi statue at Necklace Road. Congress leaders and workers marched towards the Election Commission office, raising slogans demanding the resignation of CEC Gyanesh Kumar.

The rally was part of the Congress’s wider campaign against what the party alleges are concerns surrounding the functioning of the Election Commission and the ongoing SIR voter list revision.

According to the report published by Disha Daily, Congress workers strongly criticised the BJP-led Central government and the Election Commission during the protest. The party alleged that the SIR exercise could affect voters’ rights and questioned the manner in which electoral rolls are being revised.

CEC Gyanesh Kumar Resignation Becomes Congress Demand

The demand for CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation has emerged as a central issue in the Congress’s ongoing protests.

The Telangana Congress had earlier announced statewide protests on September 28, with demonstrations planned at district headquarters. In Hyderabad, the party had announced a protest at the Ambedkar statue at Tank Bund.

TPCC president Mahesh Kumar Goud had demanded that the Election Commission provide a detailed explanation regarding reported objections allegedly raised by Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi concerning aspects of the SIR exercise.

SIR Voter List Revision at Centre of Dispute

The Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls has become the central issue behind the latest political confrontation.

Congress leaders have questioned aspects of the electoral registration process, including reported changes relating to Form 6, which is used for applications for inclusion in electoral rolls. The party has also sought greater clarity regarding changes to voter data and the accountability of Electoral Registration Officers.

The Telangana Congress has also sought state-wise and constituency-wise information concerning deletions from draft electoral rolls during the SIR process, including the reasons for deletions, objections received and names subsequently reinstated.

Reported Differences Among Election Commissioners

The political controversy intensified following reports that Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi had raised objections on several issues relating to electoral roll revisions.

According to reports cited by Congress leaders, the two Election Commissioners had raised multiple objections over decisions concerning electoral rolls and the SIR process. Congress has demanded that the Election Commission publicly clarify the reported objections and the legal basis for changes to the electoral registration process.

However, the Election Commission has maintained that decisions of the poll panel, including those concerning SIR, were approved unanimously by all three Election Commissioners. This position has been reported in response to the controversy.

Congress Raises Questions Over Voter Rights

During the Hyderabad Congress protest, party leaders raised concerns about the protection of voters’ rights and transparency in electoral-roll revisions.

Congress has argued that any deletion or modification of voter information should follow a transparent process with proper documentation and accountability. The party has also called for greater disclosure of information related to electoral-roll changes.

These claims and demands form part of the Congress’s political campaign against the Election Commission’s handling of SIR. The Election Commission, meanwhile, has stated that its decisions were taken unanimously.

Telangana Congress Intensifies Protest Campaign

The latest Telangana Congress protest follows a series of statements and demonstrations by the party over the SIR issue.

The TPCC had called on Congress units across Telangana to participate in protests at district headquarters on September 28. The objective, according to party statements, was to highlight concerns regarding the Election Commission, SIR voter list revision and the demand for CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation.

The Hyderabad rally therefore became a major part of the state’s latest political mobilisation over the electoral-roll revision controversy.

Political Temperature Rises Over Election Commission

The CEC Gyanesh Kumar resignation demand has now become a prominent issue in the Congress’s national campaign against the Election Commission’s handling of SIR.

While Congress leaders have alleged that the process raises serious questions regarding electoral transparency and voter rights, the Election Commission has rejected the suggestion that decisions were taken without the approval of all three commissioners, maintaining that SIR-related decisions were unanimously approved.

The continuing dispute is expected to keep the SIR voter list revision, Election Commission functioning and CEC Gyanesh Kumar at the centre of political debate in the coming days.
