KTR Opposes Open-Cast Coal Mine Near Ramappa Temple, Warns of Heritage Threat

KTR Opposes Coal Mine Near Ramappa Temple

Hyderabad: Former Telangana minister and BRS working president K. T. Rama Rao (KTR) has launched a sharp attack on the Revanth Reddy government over the reported proposal to establish an open-cast coal mine near Ramappa Temple in Telangana.

KTR alleged that after targeting land resources, the Congress government was now attempting to exploit underground mineral wealth at the cost of Telangana’s historic and cultural heritage. He raised the issue through a post on X, warning that mining activity close to the historic temple could pose a serious threat to the Ramappa Temple and Ramappa Lake.

KTR Warns of Serious Threat to Ramappa Temple

Reacting to the reported proposal, KTR strongly opposed the setting up of an open-cast coal mine near Ramappa Temple. He said that deep excavation and blasting operations in the vicinity of the temple could have serious consequences for the centuries-old heritage structure.

The Ramappa Temple, located in Mulugu district of Telangana, is renowned for its architectural excellence and distinctive Kakatiya-era craftsmanship. The temple was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, making its protection a matter of international heritage importance.

KTR argued that allowing large-scale coal mining near Ramappa Temple could expose the historic monument and its surrounding ecosystem to unnecessary risks.

Open-Cast Mining and Blasting Raise Concerns

According to KTR, the proposed Ramappa coal mine could involve extensive excavation and blasting activities. Such operations, he warned, may generate vibrations and potentially affect the structural stability of heritage structures in the surrounding area.

He also expressed concern about the possible impact of mining operations on Ramappa Lake, an important water body associated with the historic site.

The BRS working president questioned the rationale behind permitting open-cast coal mining near a UNESCO World Heritage Site and demanded that the government reconsider the proposal in view of heritage and environmental concerns.

BRS Opposes Ramappa Coal Mine Proposal

KTR made it clear that the BRS party opposes the proposed coal mine near Ramappa Temple. He said the protection of Telangana’s historical monuments and cultural heritage should take precedence over short-term economic considerations.

The former minister called upon the Telangana government to withdraw the proposal immediately and ensure that no mining activity is allowed to threaten the historic temple or its surrounding heritage landscape.

KTR Warns of Large-Scale Protest

KTR warned that the BRS would launch a large-scale movement if the government failed to withdraw the proposed Ramappa open-cast coal mine.

He said the party would oppose any move that could damage Telangana’s historical heritage and called for collective efforts to protect the Ramappa Temple, Ramappa Lake and the surrounding environment.

The controversy has brought renewed attention to the delicate balance between coal mining, development and heritage conservation in Telangana. With Ramappa Temple holding UNESCO World Heritage status, any proposed mining activity in its vicinity is likely to attract close scrutiny from heritage conservationists, environmental groups and the public.

Why Ramappa Temple Is Important

The Ramappa Temple is one of Telangana’s most celebrated historical monuments and is widely recognised for its Kakatiya-era architecture and intricate stone carvings. Its UNESCO World Heritage recognition has further enhanced its global cultural significance.

KTR’s objections have therefore placed the proposed Ramappa coal mine at the centre of a wider debate over whether mineral extraction should be permitted close to a protected heritage site.

The Telangana government’s response to KTR’s allegations and the exact status of the reported open-cast coal mine proposal near Ramappa Temple are now likely to remain under public and political scrutiny.
