Heart Disease Risk Rising Among Young Adults Doctors Warn of Growing Cardiac Problems in 30s and 40s

Heart disease risks rising among young adults in Telangana

World Heart Day 2026: Changing lifestyles, unhealthy diets, stress and lack of physical activity are increasing the risk of heart disease among younger people

Karimnagar: Heart disease, once largely associated with people in their 50s and 60s, is increasingly being detected among younger adults in their 30s and 40s. Doctors say changing lifestyles, unhealthy eating habits, lack of physical activity, work-related stress, smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are among the major factors contributing to the growing risk of heart disease.

With World Heart Day observed every year on September 29, health experts are emphasizing the importance of early prevention, regular health check-ups and lifestyle changes to protect heart health.

Heart Disease No Longer Limited to Older Adults

According to cardiologists, heart disease is not necessarily linked to age alone. Conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity and chronic stress are increasingly being seen among younger adults and can significantly increase cardiovascular risk.

Spending long hours sitting at work, limited physical activity, frequent consumption of fast food, excessive salt and fatty foods, inadequate sleep and prolonged stress can negatively affect heart health.

Doctors are particularly advising people with diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol and obesity to remain vigilant about their cardiovascular health.

World Heart Day Highlights Importance of Prevention

World Heart Day, observed on September 29 every year, aims to create awareness about cardiovascular diseases and encourage people to adopt preventive measures.

The increasing number of people seeking medical attention for heart-related problems has highlighted the importance of identifying risk factors at an early age.

Rather than waiting for symptoms to appear, doctors recommend regular health monitoring and a healthy lifestyle to reduce the risk of heart disease and heart attack.

“Heart Disease Can Affect People of All Ages”

Dr Anish Pabba, Cardiologist, Medicover Hospitals, Karimnagar, said heart-related diseases should not be considered an issue affecting only older people.

He said younger people are increasingly experiencing risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, obesity and stress, all of which can affect heart health.

Symptoms such as chest pain, breathing difficulty and palpitations should not be ignored, he said. Maintaining healthy blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, along with making appropriate lifestyle changes, can help reduce cardiovascular risks.

Increasing awareness about heart disease symptoms and seeking medical advice at the appropriate time can help identify potential problems early, the cardiologist said.

Major Risk Factors for Heart Disease

Doctors identify several important heart disease risk factors, including:

  • High blood pressure
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Smoking
  • Tobacco consumption
  • Excessive alcohol consumption
  • Lack of physical activity
  • Chronic stress and anxiety
  • Unhealthy eating habits
  • Family history of heart disease

Having multiple risk factors can further increase the likelihood of developing heart disease.

How to Protect Your Heart Health

Adopting a healthy lifestyle is one of the important steps towards heart disease prevention.

Doctors recommend regular physical activity, including walking and exercise, as part of everyday life. A balanced diet containing more vegetables, leafy greens, fruits and fibre-rich foods can support better heart health.

People should reduce their intake of excessive salt, sugar, oil and foods high in unhealthy fats. Quitting smoking and avoiding tobacco products are also important measures for heart disease prevention.

Limiting or avoiding alcohol, getting adequate sleep and managing stress can further contribute to cardiovascular health.

Regular Health Check-Ups Are Important

Doctors recommend not waiting until symptoms of heart disease appear before getting health checks.

People above the age of 30 should regularly monitor important health parameters such as blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels, particularly when they have additional risk factors.

Those with a family history of heart disease should discuss their individual risk with a doctor and undergo appropriate medical evaluation as advised.

Regular screening can help identify conditions such as hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol early, allowing people to take preventive measures.

Do Not Ignore These Heart Attack Warning Signs

Some heart attack symptoms can appear suddenly and require immediate medical attention.

Important warning signs include:

  • Sudden chest pain, pressure or tightness
  • Pain spreading to the left arm, shoulder or jaw
  • Difficulty breathing or shortness of breath
  • Unusual or rapid heartbeat
  • Excessive sweating
  • Sudden weakness or unexplained discomfort

Anyone experiencing symptoms that could indicate a heart attack should seek emergency medical assistance without delay.

Healthy Lifestyle Key to Better Heart Health

The growing incidence of heart disease among younger adults underlines the need for preventive healthcare from an early age.

Regular exercise, a balanced diet, maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood pressure, diabetes and cholesterol, avoiding tobacco, managing stress and getting adequate sleep can all contribute to better heart health.

On World Heart Day 2026, health experts are urging people to pay greater attention to cardiovascular health and understand that heart disease prevention begins with everyday lifestyle choices.
