గౌరవం హోదాకాదు… మనసు ఇచ్చే విలువ!
మనిషి జీవితంలో సంపదలు, పదవులు, హోదాలు ఎన్నో ఉంటాయి. కానీ మనిషిని నిజంగా గొప్పవాడిగా నిలబెట్టేది ఒకే ఒక గుణం — సాటి మనిషిని గౌరవించే మనసు.

సుమారు 20 ఏళ్ల క్రితం హైదరాబాద్ బ్రాంచ్కి మేనేజర్గా ట్రాన్స్ఫర్ అయ్యాను. కొంతకాలం తర్వాత మా కూతురు పెళ్లి జరిగింది. ఆ సంతోష సమయంలో మా ఆఫీస్ స్టాఫ్ అందరినీ కూడా ప్రేమతో ఆహ్వానించాను.
పెళ్లి రోజు వచ్చిన వారందరూ కొత్త దంపతులను ఆశీర్వదించి, తలో కానుక ఇచ్చి వెళ్లారు.
పెళ్లి సందడి తగ్గి, కొన్ని రోజుల తర్వాత మళ్లీ ఆఫీసుకు వెళ్లాను.
అప్పుడు మా ఆఫీస్లో పనిచేసే వాచ్మన్ వెంకట్రాముడు గుర్తుకు వచ్చాడు. ఆయన కూడా తన భార్యతో కలిసి పెళ్లికి వచ్చి, 10 గ్రాముల బంగారు గొలుసు కానుకగా ఇచ్చాడు.

ఒక రోజు వెంకట్రాముడిని పిలిచి ఇలా అడిగాను:
“వెంకట్రాముడు గారు, మీరు మా కూతురు పెళ్లికి రావడం చాలా ఆనందంగా ఉంది. కానీ 10 గ్రాముల బంగారు గొలుసు ఇవ్వడం మీకు తలకు మించిన భారం కాదా? అంత విలువైన కానుక ఎందుకు ఇచ్చారు?”
అంటూ ఆయన ఇచ్చిన గొలుసును తిరిగి ఆయనకే ఇవ్వాలని ప్రయత్నించాను.
వాచ్మన్ చెప్పిన మాటలు… హృదయాన్ని కదిలించాయి
వెంకట్రాముడు వెంటనే తన చెయ్యిని వెనక్కి తీసుకుంటూ ఇలా అన్నాడు:
“అయ్యా, దయచేసి ఆ కానుకను తిరిగి ఇవ్వొద్దు. అలా చేస్తే నన్ను అవమానపరిచినట్లవుతుంది.
నా ముప్పై ఏళ్ల సర్వీస్లో నన్ను ‘వెంకట్రాముడు గారు’ అని పిలిచిన వారు ఎవరూ లేరు. ‘మీరు’ అని మాట్లాడిన వారు కూడా లేరు.
కానీ మీరు మాత్రం ప్రతిరోజూ ఆఫీసుకు వచ్చేటప్పుడు ‘గుడ్ మార్నింగ్ వెంకట్రాముడు గారు, బాగున్నారా?’ అని పలకరిస్తారు.
ఆ మాట వినడానికే నేను ప్రతిరోజూ మీకంటే ముందే వచ్చి గేట్ దగ్గర నిలబడతాను.
మనిషిని వృత్తిని బట్టి కాదు, మనిషిగా గౌరవించే మీరు లాంటి గొప్పవారి కడుపున పుట్టిన మీ కుమార్తెకు నేను ఇచ్చిన ఈ కానుక ఏమాత్రం పెద్దది కాదు సార్.
మా దగ్గర డబ్బులు లేకపోవచ్చు, ఆస్తులు లేకపోవచ్చు.
కానీ మా ఆత్మగౌరవాన్ని నిలబెట్టే మీలాంటి వారికోసం ప్రాణమైనా ఇస్తాం సార్.”
అంటూ ఆయన కళ్ళలో నీళ్లు పెట్టుకుని నమస్కరించి వెళ్లిపోయాడు.

ఆ సంఘటన తర్వాత నేను చాలా సేపు ఆలోచించాను.
ఒక మనిషికి గౌరవం ఇస్తే, అతను ఇంత ప్రేమగా స్పందిస్తాడా?
